Species Fence Panel

This fence panel shows cut out shapes of specific species of plants found at the Frog Ponds.

Depending on the season, you will be able to spot some of these during your time here, so keep an eye out.

These panels are a good way for children to be aware of the incredible diversity they have here on their doorstep and begin to be able to identify local wildlife themselves in the future.

The Species Panel is part of the Frog Pond Wood sculpture trail.

Sculpture trail created by Ami Marsden and Nigel Simpson

Activity

Let’s see if you can spot a species. Sit or stand quietly behind the fence panels and take a look through the gaps at the pond behind.

Be patient, and as quiet as you can, because insects and animals are easily scared.

Can you spot any activity in the pond? Maybe a water boatman on the water / a bird looking down at the water waiting to catch an insect / ripple in the water of a little fish underneath?

Let your guardian / friend know what you have spotted.

Suggestions

  1. Make a wish in the wishing pond by throwing a little stone or a leaf in and making a wish.
  2. In spring, try calling a frog! If you make a quiet croaking sound from the back of your throat, you’ll be amazed that they can hear you and do respond!
