Safety at sports grounds
The Safety at Sports Grounds Act 1975 and the Fire Safety and Safety of Places of Sport Act 1987 state that any sports stadium that accommodates more than 10,000 spectators becomes 'designated' and any stand that holds more than 500 becomes 'regulated'. This means they have to comply with specific safety legislation.
We follow the recommendations in the home office’s Guide to Safety at Sports Grounds.
When a sports ground is found to be following its safety obligations, we issue a safety certificate and carry out regular inspections to make sure it continues to do so.
