Caerau Heat Scheme
Using funding from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through the Welsh Government, Bridgend County Borough Council (BCBC) originally promoted a scheme to develop a mine water heating scheme for the village of Caerau in the Llynfi valley.
The project aimed to use heat from former mine workings to provide heat to homes and other buildings in Caerau to create economic opportunities, reduce energy bills and act on CO2 emission reduction targets.
The design and development stages of the project revealed that technical and commercial uncertainties and challenges were going to make it unlikely that the hoped-for cost savings for consumers were going to be realised.
Toolkit
In order to share the learning from this scheme, BCBC commissioned a project to create this toolkit intended to communicate the lessons learned from this project to assist future projects to promote and develop heating projects that utilise the heat source present in old mine workings.
