Construction work for the new four classroom teaching block at Bryntirion Comprehensive School has begun, with highway improvements planned to start at the beginning of October.
The project will accommodate the rising number of pupils coming from housing developments in the school’s catchment area, offering additional teaching space as well as toilets, storage and circulation areas.
Korbuild Limited has been appointed to complete the building, as well as the groundworks needed to facilitate a two-classroom extension that may possibly be built at a later stage if necessary.
The planning conditions for the school’s expansion include enhancements to the highway to improve existing active travel routes surrounding the school, which will be addressed before the school extension is completed. The highway works, which include a series of dropped kerbs, new footway and kerbing, tactile paving, as well as fingerpost signage, will be undertaken by Horizon Civil Engineering Limited.
Cllr Martyn Jones, Cabinet Member for Education and Youth Services, said: “It’s exciting to see the plans for the school coming into fruition. The extension to Bryntirion Comprehensive School is vital for the school to accommodate its growing intake of pupils and to continue to offer quality provision for learners.
“Pupils from the local area will benefit from this investment for years to come. We hope that any works related to the extension will cause minimal disruption to those travelling in the area and would also like to thank residents for their understanding and patience during this period.”
