Wildmill Community Centre takes centre stage to celebrate International Youth Day

Wildmill Community Centre, Bridgend, was a hive of activity on 12 August to mark International Youth Day - an event established by the United Nations in 2000 to celebrate the qualities of young people, recognise the challenges that they may face, as well as encourage their participation in shaping a better future.
A collaboration between Bridgend County Borough Council’s Youth Support Services and Community Safety Partnership, the event offered a range of activities including football, art, BMX biking and DJ workshops provided by Bridgend Youth Matters and Youthworks.
Matthew Rowlands, Youth and Community Project Worker with Bridgend Youth Matters, said: “We had an amazing day at Wildmill Community Centre for International Youth Day! It was wonderful to deliver some superb activities to the youth of Wildmill, including football challenges, bushcraft, DJ workshops, to name just a few – everyone seemed to have a great time! We are proud to be working in partnership with so many like-minded organisations, staff, and volunteers.”
One local 12-year-old resident said: “I really enjoyed the day at the community centre. There were so many activities to try – the BMX track and bikes were my favourite! The youth workers were all fun too and we received lots of information and freebies to take home.”
Funded by the Welsh Government Community Cohesion grant, the celebration also enabled the Community Safety Team, Assia Domestic Abuse Service, the Cleaner Streets Education and Enforcement Team, as well as Valleys to Coast Housing to raise awareness of the issues surrounding anti-social behaviour, domestic abuse and dog fouling.
Cllr Martyn Jones, Cabinet Member for Education and Youth Services, said: “What a fantastic opportunity to bring together the community to acknowledge the contributions, aspirations, potential, as well as the challenges experienced by our young people, whilst encouraging them to voice their opinions and assume active roles in their communities.
Cllr Neelo Farr, Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Economic Development and Housing, added: “The Wildmill Community Centre event was successful, with lots of people engaging in the activities available and appearing to be enjoying! From start to finish, the celebration was inclusive and offered everyone a warm welcome.
“Thank you to all involved in organising this occasion dedicated to our local youth – we are looking forward to next year!”
