White Ribbon ‘Run for Change’ strives for a better future

Bridgend County Borough Council’s Assia Domestic Abuse Service and South Wales Police have collaborated to host a 5k family fun run, titled ‘Run for Change: End the Violence’, with the support of Raw Performance Fitness Centre.  The event is planned for 30 November, at Newbridge Fields, Bridgend, in a bid to raise awareness of White Ribbon and funds to support Assia.

White Ribbon is the leading UK charity engaging with men and boys to end violence against women and girls. Men wearing the white ribbon in support of White Ribbon Day, 25 November, are stating that they will never commit, excuse, or remain silent about men's violence against women.

Bridgend Neighbourhood Police Inspector, Gareth Newman, said: “Tackling violence against women and girls is a priority for South Wales Police, and we are proud to be working together with Bridgend County Borough Council to demonstrate our support for White Ribbon.

“The aim of this fun run is to have the community come together to raise awareness and focus on how we can promote change.  Events such as this highlight domestic abuse issues and family violence.

“We all have a role in the prevention of everyday violence in the home.”

Councillor Neelo Farr, Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Economic Development and Housing, commented: “What a fantastic way for the Assia Domestic Abuse Service and South Wales Police to promote White Ribbon and raise funds for Assia.

“Assia offers a sterling service throughout the year, with the friendly and experienced team providing a range of support, including advice, guidance and refuge for those experiencing domestic abuse.

“We are very proud that Assia is an accredited SafeLives’ Leading Lights service.  This is a quality assurance indicator for domestic abuse services that is acknowledged across the UK, guaranteeing that local families receive the very best provision and support possible.

“The family fun day promises to be a great morning out and we really hope that people will come along to offer their support.”

The family friendly event starts with registration at 9.30am; tickets costing £5 for adults, £2.50 for children and £10 for a family.
