St Mary’s Catholic Primary School receives glowing inspection report

Following an Estyn inspection earlier this year, the nurturing, caring environment of St Mary’s Catholic Primary School has been spotlighted alongside other noted strengths of the school.

The school has received a sterling inspection report, with many features of the school being praised.  These qualities range from the well-considered development, design and planning of the school’s curriculum, to the positive relationships between pupils and adults at the school, in turn creating a safe, happy environment in which pupils’ wellbeing is paramount.

Teachers have also been applauded for the skilful use of the outdoors to enrich learning, particularly in relation to the youngest pupils, with Estyn inviting the school to prepare a case study on its provision of high-quality learning experiences for this cohort.

Bee keeping, growing vegetables in the allotment, followed by harvesting then selling the honey and cooking healthy meals with the vegetables, are just some of the ways in which teachers offer authentic learning experiences to the children.

Headteacher, Rachel Azzopardi, said: “Governors and staff are delighted that the commitment, talent and hard work of the whole school community has been recognised in the recent Estyn inspection.

“I am delighted with the findings during the inspection and feel that the report reflects our school and its ethos accurately.

“I am particularly pleased that it was acknowledged that our vision for learning and wellbeing permeate every aspect of school life.  Estyn described our school as a 'caring community', affirming the emphasis all staff place on creating a supportive and inclusive environment for all. We pride ourselves on the strong partnerships we hold with families, the community and parish, enriching the culture of our school.”

Councillor Martyn Jones, Cabinet Member for Education and Youth Services, said: “When children are happy and feel safe, they will thrive and learn.  The caring, supportive and inclusive environment offered by St Mary’s Catholic Primary School provides the best opportunity for its pupils to develop their skills and understanding.

“I would like to congratulate the school on its fantastic inspection report which recognises the nurturing culture offered by staff, as well as many other attributes - in particular, the use of the outdoors in providing engaging and enriching learning experiences for the children.

“The Estyn inspection report is a very well-deserved acknowledgement of the staff’s dedication and commitment to the pupils.  Well done all!”
