Schools and pupils shine bright throughout Bridgend County Borough on GCSE results day

Pupils from across Bridgend County Borough have excelled on GCSE results day (Thursday 22 August 2024) and families and schools are celebrating the efforts of learners.

Lots of pupils have achieved fantastic grades in schools throughout the county borough, with many choosing to continue their education in sixth form or college, while others have chosen to begin an apprenticeship or delve into the world of employment instead.

Mr Ashley Howells, Headteacher at Archbishop McGrath Catholic High School, said “Our Year 11 pupils have achieved some outstanding results, and these reflect the hard work they have put in over the last two years. Outcomes such as these are only possible with the support provided by our families and the input from our brilliant team of staff. As always, by working together, we have been able to maximise the life chances of our learners.

“Whilst the majority of our Year 11 students will be continuing their studies in our sixth form, others will be taking on the challenge of work-based training and vocational courses. We wish them every success on the next part of their journeys. We know they will be excellent ambassadors for our school.”

Mrs Tracey Wellington, Headteacher at Coleg Cymunedol Y Dderwen (CCYD), added: “Year 11 have been a very special year group. They are an amazing group of young people, and I thoroughly enjoyed every assembly with them. They were always receptive, polite and resilient. They have been excellent ambassadors of CCYD, and they have supported each other through some very difficult and challenging years.”

I’d like to congratulate pupils on their hard work. It is great to see lots of students achieving fantastic results and I have no doubt that the class of 2024 will be successful in their future endeavours.

There are now many paths open to young people in Bridgend County Borough, whether it is sixth form or college, training or apprenticeships or going onto employment - it’s great to hear about their future plans.

I’d also like to give a huge thank you to all teachers and support staff for dedicating themselves to ensure young people across the county borough are set up for success.

Councillor Martyn Jones, Cabinet Member for Education and Youth Services

Pupils and families are also reminded that lots of support is available, and they are advised to:

  • Talk to their school who can offer advice and support on what options are available.
  •      Visit the Careers Wales website where there are plenty of resources available to help.
  • Consider an apprenticeship where you can work alongside industry professionals, earn a wage, and develop your skills – visit the Welsh Government website for more information.
