Residents urged to take extra care as snow arrives in Bridgend County Borough

Residents have been advised to take extra care following the arrival of snow in Bridgend County Borough and plans have been put in place by the council to deal with the impact of any disruption.

Local people are advised to visit the council’s website and social media channels to keep up to date with the latest developments.

Headteachers have been updating the council’s dedicated school closures page whilst also contacting parents through their usual communication methods including text messages, email and school apps. There are currently 27 schools closed in the area.

All waste and recycling collections are currently going ahead as normal, but they may be subject to change if weather and road conditions worsen or if a street can’t be accessed safely.

Also, all three community recycling centres are safe to open following an inspection this morning.

Any refuse not collected today will be caught up on Saturday 11th March to avoid further disruption to other areas this week and any recycling not collected will be completed on the next scheduled collection day.

If recycling is usually collected from communal bins this will not be collected today and will be caught up on Saturday 11th March.

Bulk waste collections and deliveries of new bags and equipment have been temporarily postponed.

Crews have been working throughout the night to keep the main road network safe and they will continue to treat roads throughout the day. Workers will also be spreading grit around busy pedestrian areas and all grit bins have been refilled.

The A4061 / A4107 Bwlch Mountain road has been closed in all directions and snow ploughs are being used to clear the route before it is reassessed later in the day.

Council staff have been working throughout the night to make sure the county borough is as safe as possible for all our residents.

Safety is our number one priority and any closures have been made with this in mind. I urge residents to take extra care and I advise them to visit the council’s winter weather webpage, which offers plenty of advice and useful information including answers to frequently asked questions.

Councillor Huw David, Leader of Bridgend County Borough Council

Councillor John Spanswick, Cabinet Member for Communities, said: “Council staff always make sure that timely preparations are in place for the possibility of snow.

“When temperatures drop, the council pre-treats the most-used parts of the road network with granulated rock salt to prevent frost and ice forming and can call upon a number of specially designed vehicles such as gritters to keep roads clear.”
