Pencoed Comprehensive School’s Young Carers’ Group is first to claim award

The Young Carers’ Group at Pencoed Comprehensive School is leading the way for good practice in relation to young carers, being the first secondary school in the county borough to claim the Young Carers in Schools Plus Award.

Developed in consultation with schools, young carer services and young carers, the award consists of two levels, with the higher tier, Award Plus, just launched in 2024.  The accolade allows schools to gain recognition from leading charities for their good practice and ability to meet the needs of young carers.

Championing the young carers attending the school, staff member Mrs Bishop and her wellbeing team have adopted several strategies to ensure that members feel seen, heard and supported. 

Since the group was established in 2017 with initially just five members, the young carers have contributed to the planning and delivery of lessons to raise awareness about their situation; designed their own logo for their school uniform to identify themselves, as well as had the opportunity to experience social activities such as surfing or visiting local theme parks.

Currently, 30 learners belong to the group, with pupils empowered to refer themselves to join if they wish.  Scheduled every two weeks, the meetings are designed to create a safe environment where learners can talk openly with others who are experiencing similar challenges.  Additionally, the sessions can also offer extra academic support if needed.

One young carer at the school said: “The group helps me because I can have a break from work, from everything, and do something fun.”  Another learner added: “Being a young carer can be challenging sometimes.  I enjoy attending the meetings because I meet with other young carers.”

Headteacher, Edward Jones, said: “We are delighted to have achieved the Young Carers in Schools Plus Award.  As a school, we hope that we are at the forefront in adopting a whole school approach to supporting young carers.  

“The work put in place by our Wellbeing Hub to help our young carers is testament to the partnership between the group and staff.  The award very much belongs to the Young Carers’ Group - it goes without saying that every school community should have a Mrs Bishop!”

Deputy Leader of Bridgend County Borough Council, Cllr Jane Gebbie, said: “This is fantastic news and a very well-deserved award! To support and accommodate the needs of the young carers in the school community so sensitively and fully is quite an achievement.

“It is clear that the relationship between the staff and pupils is founded on trust, with the young carers feeling supported and nurtured, enabling them to thrive. Well done all!”
