New facility planned for Flying Start provision in Nantymoel

Welsh Government funding is supporting the Flying Start childcare expansion programme across the county borough, with Nantymoel set to benefit from a new purpose-built facility to accommodate the childcare provision that already exists within the area.

Operating from ‘The Mem’ (The Memorial Community Centre) in Nantymoel as a temporary measure since 2023, the childcare service is promised a more permanent base with modern resources from the new build.  The space will offer bespoke facilities, including dedicated toilet and hygiene provision, as well as direct access to a covered outdoor area where children’s play and learning can be extended.

The proposed Nantymoel Flying Start childcare setting would provide 12 full-time equivalent (that is, 24 part-time) high-quality places for two to three-year-olds, delivering morning and afternoon sessions, with staff employed by the local authority.

Currently, a feasibility study is underway on the former Nantymoel Infants School site at Dinam Street and the outcome will determine the location’s suitability for the new provision.

This is welcome news for families living in the Nantymoel community. The Flying Start provision there already offers so much. Research shows that regular attendance at a quality childcare setting has shown to significantly improve outcomes for children, particularly in terms of their communication skills, physical, social and emotional development.

When the children transition to Nursery education, they are ready to learn, are confident in socialising with others and are keen to embrace the opportunities that are offered. I cannot praise the funded Flying Start childcare provision enough, it is an amazing support for parents and children.

The new build, with its up-to-date facilities, can only further enhance the excellent provision that Nantymoel’s Flying Start already offers.
