More opportunities on offer to develop a career in social care

Following on from the resounding success of the ‘Pathways to Care’ course held in May, the council’s Adult Social Care and Employability Bridgend teams are offering a second round of recruitment opportunities for people looking to enter the field of social care.

This unique opportunity to access free, accredited training will take place for one week, starting on the 14 October 2024, 9.30am to 3pm. Held at Bridgend Halo Life Centre, the course will offer a series of informative workshops, the chance to meet members of the team and the individuals they support, alongside the opportunity to gain an in-depth understanding of the expectations and the role of a social care worker.

Participants who successfully complete the short course will not only receive free accreditation but will also be offered an opportunity to practice interview techniques and support with entering immediate employment as a local authority social care worker.

Our Pathways to Care course is an ideal opportunity for anyone with a passion for helping and supporting others to gain meaningful employment.

It’s aimed at those with little or no experience in social care, but who have a positive approach to supporting others.

We were delighted that 17 people signed up to previous course, earlier this year, and as a result we appointed five individuals who now have permanent employment with the council.

Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Social Services, Health and Wellbeing, Councillor Jane Gebbie

Claire Evans, who attended the first course, and who is working in one of the authority’s residential care homes, said: “I had previously worked in a large supermarket for twelve years before taking time out to care for my family. I knew that my former role had given me some very useful, transferrable skills.

“Although, I was a bit doubtful at first, I received some positive advice and encouragement to attend the course from Employability Bridgend, and I’m so glad now that I did sign up!

“I found the course really inspiring and as a result, I’ve made a life changing decision to work in the support care industry.”

Claire added that she is “really enjoying” her new role, learning about the various aspects of her job, working with the residents, and getting to know them.
