Halo Leisure reaches finals for the National Learning Disability and Autism Awards

Halo Leisure’s autism friendly swimming lesson programme has been recognised for making swimming more accessible for children with learning disabilities and autism.

The awards celebrate the outstanding efforts of individuals or organisations who provide excellent care for children with learning disabilities.

Shortlisted for the Sporting Chance Award category, Halo Leisure’s autism-friendly swim lessons have been established since 2020, as part of a collaboration with partners including Bridgend County Borough Council, the Wales National Autism Team and the National Autistic Society Bridgend & District branch.

Ryan Statton, Head of Active Communities at Halo Leisure, said: "We are so excited to be a finalist in this prestigious national award. We are proud to be in the running alongside other organisations across the country who are also doing remarkable work. We will find out soon if we have won - fingers crossed!"

One parent said: "My son hasn't always had the best experiences with swimming teachers due to them not being trained in ASD and understanding his needs. The teachers for Halo’s autism swim course are incredible and have ignited my son's excitement for swimming lessons."

The growing demand for the popular service means that there is a referral and selection process in place to ensure fair and equal access for families living with autism.

Awarded with funding from BBC Children in Need, staff go above and beyond in relation to the programme – ensuring that that swimming lessons are accessible, inclusive and fun for the children.
