Council’s Capital Programme spells out good news for schools

Bridgend County Borough’s Cabinet has approved an updated capital programme, allowing local schools to benefit from additional investment.

Bryntirion Comprehensive School has funds earmarked for a new six-classroom teaching block, including toilets and storage areas. 

Planned housing developments in the school’s catchment area are underway, meaning there will be an increase in the number of pupils needing to be accommodated by the comprehensive, which is already at full capacity.  The new classrooms offer a long-term solution to this issue.

With a budget of £1.8m, Bryntirion Comprehensive School is set to have its new classrooms by the end of May 2024.

Other funds have been allocated to support the roll out of the Universal Primary Free School Meals Programme, through the provision of kitchen resources.  From the beginning of April this year, all children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 have been offered a free school meal, with Reception pupils benefitting from a free school meal since September 2022. 

To assist the initiative, Welsh Government has awarded the council with additional grant funding of £1.035m.  This will fund the building of an extension to the kitchen at Trelales Primary, as well as the purchase of kitchen pods for Cwmfelin Primary, Newton Primary and Bryntirion Infants Schools.

What fantastic news for these schools! We are especially grateful to receive additional funding from Welsh Government to ensure that our pupils are best supported in terms of their wellbeing and education.
