Community organisations encouraged to apply for food sufficiency grants

Funded by Welsh Government and Bridgend County Borough Council, newly available food sufficiency grants are targeting food poverty across the county borough throughout the summer months.

Managed by BAVO, Bridgend Association of Voluntary Organisations, on the council’s behalf, there will be an initial two rounds of food sufficiency grants available, both running for two weeks each. 

The first phase of grants is available from now until 21 July, with the second phase opening from 24 July and closing on 4 August.  Further rounds may become available, depending on funding availability.

The support is being offered to community organisations in the county borough that are helping people with food provisions.  The money may allow such organisations to continue or extend their work.

There may be a range of possible uses for the grants, including providing quality food supplies, meeting volunteer training needs, as well as supporting initiatives to develop the skills and knowledge of families in relation to food. 

Heidi Bennett, Chief Executive of BAVO, said:  "Residents are experiencing a cost-of-living crisis with the price of energy, fuel, food, rent and mortgage rates rising at rates we have not experienced for generations. We are fortunate in Bridgend County Borough to have many wonderful charities, voluntary groups and other organisations working to help those in greatest need, but these organisations need help too, as they are also seeing an increase in demand.

"I'm grateful to the council and the Welsh Government for their help in providing funding to support these efforts."                                                                                                            

 

We are delighted to be able to offer these funds, together with Welsh Government, to assist community organisations to address food poverty throughout the summer.

We recognise that the financial climate is difficult at the moment and that people may be struggling with many different expenses. We hope this this funding will facilitate such organisations to fulfil their much-needed role.
