The Cabinet of Bridgend County Borough Council has approved a list of priority strategic transport projects that can be progressed when new funding is made available by UK or Welsh Government, either as part of the Cardiff Capital Region (CCR) Metro Programme or other transport funding initiatives.
Currently, the largest investment in strategic transportation in the county borough is Porthcawl’s Metrolink bus facility, funded by CCR in partnership with Welsh Government (WG), and the council’s Active Travel programme, funded by WG.
Other prioritized transport projects – all compliant with national, regional and local policies, as well as linking with WG, Transport Wales and Network Rail - currently have limited or no funding. These schemes can be put forward for financial support from any future Cardiff Capital Region Metro Programme, ‘Levelling Up’ fund, developers, or other new funding source.
We welcome investment in our transport projects to ensure that residents across the county borough continue to benefit from updated links across the local area, as well as the wider Cardiff Capital Region (CCR) in south-east Wales. Our Active Travel programme and updated public transport options also support our net zero target, by reducing reliance on more carbon intensive transport options.
We will fully explore future funding options for the priority transport schemes that have been highlighted, to ensure that they can be implemented if funding is made available.
