£1.6m funding helps reinstate evening bus services for the Llynfi Valley

A popular local bus service is to reinstate its evening journeys next month following a successful bid by Bridgend County Borough Council for Welsh Government funding.
The council will use part of a £1.6m Bus Network Grant to support First Cymru in offering additional journeys on the Number 70 Bridgend to Cymmer service.
Starting on Monday 5 August 2024, the service, which already travels from Bridgend town centre to Cymmer and back up to 10 times a day, will operate three extra evening journeys between Monday and Saturday, and one additional journey in the morning from Cymmer to Bridgend at 7.45am.
The Number 70 service will depart Bridgend bus station at 6.40pm, 7.40pm and 8.40pm, with return trips leaving from the turning circle at Cymmer at 6.55pm and 7.55pm.
The news comes almost a full year after evening journeys on the service had to be suspended because it was not commercially viable without a subsidy towards the costs of providing it.
Councillor Paul Davies, Cabinet Member for Climate Change and the Environment, said: “This is fantastic news for people living in the Llynfi Valley, and is sure to offer greater convenience for anyone who needs to travel to and from Bridgend in the early evening.
“Following our successful bid for Bus Network Grant funding earlier in the year, I would like to thank Welsh Government for their support in awarding Bridgend County Borough Council more than £1.6m to help support routes such as the Number 70 service.”
